The word "hypnotherapy" can be very confusing for clients seeking help. It is a form of focused relaxation that allows us to access the subconscious mind. Hypnosis guides your attention away from the everyday world, so that you can concentrate on a goal, such as overcoming anxiety, stress etc...
FACT 1: The word "hypnosis" comes from the Greek word hypnos, which means sleep. This is because it appeared that the people who where hypnotised were asleep.
What you experience when you are hypnotised is called an altered conscious state.
So you are awake, but you're not paying attention to the "conscious" world in the same way.
Instead your thoughts are focused inwards and you drift off into a mild trance.
FACT 2: Trance is a natural state, that many of us experience at different times of the day. If you mind wanders off when you're doing something routine, then you may just be in a trance.
By blocking out distractions, trance removes your natural resistance to change. When you bypass the conscious mind, you stop your natural habit to analyse everything!
FACT 3: You can't lose control of your mind or get stuck in a trance. You will be safely brought out of a trance when under hypnosis or naturally bring yourself out of it yourself.
There are 3 elements to a hypnosis session. "Induction" relaxing the body and the mind, the more relaxed you are the easier it is to enter a trance. "Change" once you are relaxed your attention is focused inward, you're able to accept suggestions without distraction. So long as you believe these suggestions are beneficial to you, then you will accept them easily and make the changes that will change your life. "Exit" your trance safely and easily, to come back to your normal waking state. This can be done very simply by counting from 1 to 5.
FACT 4: In order for hypnosis to work you have to be motivated to make changes. Hypnosis doesn't work if its against your will.
